Liam HalawithMaroon Echoes News Managing Editor MT. PLEASANT – Mt. Pleasant senior Sam Carrasco placed 3rd overall in the 220 lbs category at the District Wrestling Meet in Panther Gym on Saturday. Unfortunately, since Carrasco placed 3rd, he does not qualify for State wrestling.
Carrasco had a turbulent Saturday afternoon after losing his first match via Fall but winning his second match. With no wrestleback, due to a previous loss to the same wrestler in the bracket. In Carrasco’s first matchup against Albia’s Paul Ballard, he lost via Fall at 3:46. Carrasco was caught off of his game by the seasoned wrestler and was pinned after almost two periods, Ballard was 30-5, 9 after the win. In Carrasco’s reconciliation bracket he faced off against Chase Diaz, the same wrestler he beat at the Varsity Sectionals the week before. Carrasco pulled it off again to beat Chase Diaz a second time, via Major Decision 11-3. Unfortunately, there was no wrestleback in the 220 lbs category due to Ballard’s previous win over Carrasco earlier that day. Although Carrasco and no other Panther wrestlers will be heading to state, 14 other area wrestlers from Danville, New London, and Winfield will be heading to state.
