Liam HalawithMaroon Echoes News Managing Editor Panther Girls Clawed Out by Fort Madison, 36-31 MT. PLEASANT – The Mt. Pleasant Panther Girls Basketball team was defeated by the Fort Madison Bloodhounds Friday night in the Mt. Pleasant Gym. The Panthers lost by 5 points, in the non-conference matchup, 36-31. The Panthers started out strong in the first quarter leading the Bloodhounds, 8-7, at the end of the first quarter. With some impressive defense, the Bloodhound girls were able to take control of the court and move to the top in the second quarter. Fort Madison on top at halftime by 1 point, 13 -12. After the half, the Bloodhounds broke away from the Panthers by coming out with force right off the start. Scoring a total of 10 points Fort Madison took the lead. The Panthers were unable to close the gap, and because of Fort Madison’s strong defense only scored 6 points in the 3rd quarter giving the Bloodhounds their game-winning lead. The Panthers rallied at the last minute with 2 and a half minutes left in the fourth, by pulling out some Panther power and matching the Bloodhounds score with both teams scoring 13 points. In the end it was too much to overcome and the Panthers fell 36-31. Panther sophomore Andrea Lopreato scored 12 points in the game, leading the Panthers, with Senior Karsyn Lamm adding 6 points of her own. The Panthers fall to 5-5 this season. Even with this loss the girls are up 4-2 in the SEC. The Panther girls faceoff against Holy Trinity Catholic School this Monday, on the road. The varsity game begins at 7:30 p.m. Quarter by Quarter Breakdown: Q1: 8 - 7, MP Q2: 13 - 12, FM Q3: 23 - 18, FM Q4: 36 - 31, FM Panther Boys Caged by Bloodhounds, 53-46 FORT MADISON – The Mt. Pleasant Panther Boys Basketball team was defeated by the Fort Madison Bloodhounds Friday night on the road. The Bloodhounds led by 7 points after a hard-fought game closing, 53-64. The Panthers broke out at the start of the game scoring the first 5 points, then the Bloodhounds came in scoring 11 to put them on top at the end of the first quarter, 11-7. With the Panthers unable to break Fort Madison, the Bloodhounds led by 5 moving into the second half of the game, finishing 25-21. The Panthers rallied back in the third quarter scoring 17 points with a series of 3 point baskets, over Fort Madison’s 11 points. The Panthers led the Bloodhounds at the end of the third 37-36. However, the Bloodhounds caught up with the Panthers, scoring 17 points in the 4th quarter putting them on top at the buzzer, 53-46. Panther Junior Dewon Trent scored 21 points for the Panthers leading the team, with a total of 14 rebounds. The Panthers are now 5-5 overall in the season and 3-3 in the SEC. The Panthers face off against Cedar Rapids Washington this Monday in the Panther Gym, tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. Quarter by Quarter Breakdown:
