In a study conducted by The Wall Street Journal, 20% of high school students are vaping. Half of those asked said they like the flavor. Teens are more likely to abuse e-cigarettes then actual cigarettes. 16.2 percent of 12th grade students use e-cigarettes, meanwhile 11.4 use actual cigarettes. According to the Wall Street Journal, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said “youth e-cigarette use in the United States is an epidemic”. He went on to announce new steps his agency is taking to prevent youth vaping. According to WebMD™, there have been 805 cases of vaping related illness in the United States, and the death toll has risen to 17 people. Most of which are connected to vaping THC products. They have even found trace amounts of pesticides in the oil. This writer interviewed several high school students on their use of vaping products: Why did you start and or quit? One anonymous 12th grader, who attends MPCHS answered, “I started vaping because my parents and brother kind of enabled me, and somewhat encouraged me to do it with them, because it was ‘Better than smoking cigarettes.’ I quit after a few months because it just wasn’t fun, and honestly, it wasn’t good for my breathing issues.” While another claimed they started to quit smoking actual cigarettes. How does/did it make you feel? Another anonymous source said it helped with nervous habits and calmed them to the point where they can sleep better. What did you vape? (THC, CBD, and Nicotine.) Out of the five students interviewed, only two have tried THC, three CBD, and all five have tried nicotine. How do your parents feel about you vaping? Most of the students interviewed said their parents were clueless to them using the substances. Two student’s parents actually knew that they were using. One of which claimed their parents were okay with it because they're of age. While the other said her parents started them on it. Do the recent health scares around vaping scare you? Will it make you quit if you haven't already? Most of the students I talked to believe that just as long they do not buy from the blackmarket, then they will be safe. They feel that if they buy their stuff from stores there is no danger. Sending their older friends or siblings inside to get them their stuff. REMINDER- Tobacco products on school grounds are banned. If you are caught with the products you can be suspended. If you are caught again you will be expelled from school. Even if your products are in your vehicle or on your person. Marshall FluhartyMaroon Echoes Reporter. The black panther, a vicious and fearless hunter from the wild. A wonderful symbol for the fierce school we go to, Mt. Pleasant. But where did we get this school emblem of a bold creature? Who picked it? Where did it come from? How was it chosen to be our mascot?
Our story begins in 1926, when the high school student council decided that we needed a mascot, an emblem for athletics and rallies as a whole. They started a contest to pick a name for the school teams. The contest started on February 4th with a grand prize of $5, which is $70 in today’s dollar value! One week later, on February 12th Howard Hills and Israel Ankerman won with their suggestion and the Mt. Pleasant Panthers came to be. Although the Panthers were brought up in announcements through the years, none would actually see the emblem until 1940, on our basketball jerseys. And no one would see it on the MPCHS yearbook until 1959. The Panther has been the face for our school for 93 years, and it has served us well, a powerful symbol of our strength and ability. Generations of Panthers have passed through our halls, and we will never forget those that came before us. Panthers are forever! Panther ON! |
